How to Pass the PD3 Exam in 2026

The **Prøve i Dansk 3 (PD3)** is more than just a language test; it is a test of your ability to participate in Danish society. Whether you are aiming for permanent residency or admission to higher education, the requirements are strict. The exam is divided into four main components: Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking.

The Writing Challenge

The written portion of the PD3 consists of two tasks: a formal email/letter and a descriptive essay (often an opinion piece). Our **Writing Trainer** module focuses on "Muscle Memory"—teaching you the fixed phrases (faste vendinger) that examiners look for to award a 10 or 12 grade.

For those on the **FVU (Forberedende Voksenundervisning)** track, the focus is more practical. It is about reading workplace manuals, understanding news articles, and basic written communication. Our hub provides tailored practice for both academic and vocational paths.

Exam Day Tips

  • Manage Time: Don't spend more than 5 minutes on the short writing task.
  • Keywords First: In the listening exam, read the questions *before* the audio starts.
  • Structure: Always use an Intro, Body, and Conclusion in your essays.

Exam FAQ

What is the passing grade for PD3?

To pass PD3, you usually need a grade of 02 in each of the four disciplines. However, for permanent residency or citizenship, the requirements often stipulate a higher average, such as a 6 or 7.

How many times a year can I take the exam?

The national Danish exams (PD1, PD2, PD3) are held twice a year, typically in May/June and November/December.

Can I bring a dictionary to the written exam?

Yes, for the written production (Task 2) in PD3, you are permitted to use certain approved dictionaries. Digital dictionaries are usually not allowed unless provided by the school.

How long is the PD3 oral exam?

The oral exam lasts about 30 minutes, which includes a 2-minute presentation on a chosen topic followed by a dialogue with the examiner and censor.

What is the difference between PD2 and PD3?

PD2 is aimed at those at a B1 level, focusing on practical life. PD3 is B2 level and is more academic/socially analytical.

Is FVU better than DU for working professionals?

FVU is often preferred by those already in the workforce because it focuses on functional literacy (Reading/Writing/Math) and is often more flexible than the DU tracks.

How is the written essay graded?

Grading focuses on three areas: Content/Relevance, Linguistic Accuracy (Grammar), and Vocabulary/Complexity.

Do I need to pass the Citizenship Test (Indfødsretsprøven) too?

Yes, if your goal is Danish Citizenship, the PD3 is the language requirement, but the Indfødsretsprøve is a separate test on Danish history and culture.

How can I improve my listening score?

Listen to 'P1 Radio' or Danish podcasts like 'Genstart' daily. Exposure to different dialects is the only way to prepare for the fast-paced audio clips.

Can I retake just one part of the exam?

No, typically the exam is taken as a whole block. If you fail significantly, you must register for the entire exam again in the next period.
