The Application Process

You have validated your documents and checked your language level. Now comes the most important part: securing your spot at a SOSU school and finding an employer sponsorship.

1. Navigating Optagelse.dk

In Denmark, almost all vocational education applications go through the national portal Optagelse.dk. For international applicants, this portal can be confusing because it is designed for Danish students coming straight out of 9th grade.

When applying for Grundforløb 2 (GF2), you must log in using your MitID. You will be asked to upload the validation from the Ministry (Step 1) and your language certificates (Step 2).

Official Portal Link

The application window usually opens twice a year (January and August starts). Ensure you check the deadlines for your local SOSU school (e.g., SOSU H, SOSU Østjylland, or Diakonissestiftelsen).

Go to Optagelse.dk

2. Writing the Motivation Letter

Your "Motiveret Ansøgning" is your chance to shine. Since you are likely transitioning from a service job (cleaning, hospitality), you must explain why you want to work with people.

Key tips for your letter:

  • Transferable Skills: Mention how your hard work in cleaning proves you are reliable and physically capable of a demanding job.
  • Empathy: Describe a time you helped someone or why you care about elderly care in Denmark.
  • Future Goals: State clearly if you intend to become a SOSU Assistant or a Nurse later. Danish schools love "ambition."

3. The Copenhagen Contract (Læreplads)

Copenhagen Municipality (Københavns Kommune) is the largest employer of SOSU students in Denmark. To receive the Voksenelevløn (Adult Salary) of approximately 22,000+ DKK, you must apply for a contract directly through the municipality.

Example: Applying in Copenhagen

In Copenhagen, you must perform a "Double Application." You apply to SOSU H (the school) and the Health and Care Administration (the employer) at the same time.

  • 1
Find open positions on the Københavns Kommune Career Portal.
  • 2
Search for "Social- og sundhedshjælperelev" or "Social- og sundhedsassistentelev."
  • 3
Apply for Voksenelevløn if you are over 25 and have 1 year of relevant experience (like cleaning in a nursing home).

Other Municipalities

Likewise, you can search for other municipalities such as Aarhus, Odense, or Aalborg. Simply search for "[Municipality Name] + SOSU elev stillinger" on Google. Most follow a similar recruitment pattern as Copenhagen but may have different internal deadlines.

4. The School Interview (Samtale)

If your application is accepted, you will be invited for an interview. This is not just a language test; it is a personality test. The school wants to see if you have the "Healthcare Heart."

Common Interview Question:

"Hvad vil du gøre, hvis en borger nægter at modtage hjælp?" (What would you do if a citizen refuses help?)

Hint: The answer is always about patience, communication, and respecting the citizen's autonomy (selvbestemmelse).
