Language Requirements for SOSU

Effective communication is the foundation of the Danish healthcare system. Whether you are aiming to be a SOSU-hjælper or Assistent, your Danish level determines your safety and success in the workplace.

The Strategic Difference: DU2 vs. DU3

In Denmark, the municipal language centers (Sprogcentre) offer three different tracks. If you are currently working in a non-skilled service job, you might have been placed in Danskuddannelse 2 (DU2). While this track is designed for people with shorter educational backgrounds, the requirements for the healthcare sector are rising.

In 2026, most SOSU schools (Social- og Sundhedsskoler) require students to have passed Prøve i Dansk 2 with a minimum grade of 02 in all disciplines for the Helper program. However, if your ambition is to become a SOSU Assistant, you are strongly encouraged to pursue Danskuddannelse 3 (DU3). The Assistant role involves complex medicine administration and digital reporting where precision in language is non-negotiable.

Vocational Language Training (GF1)

For those who haven't reached the required Danish level yet, Grundforløb 1 (GF1) offers a "soft landing." This 20-week course is specifically for students who need to strengthen their vocational Danish while getting a taste of the healthcare profession. It acts as a bridge, ensuring you aren't just learning "classroom Danish," but "Hospital Danish."

Why SOSU Schools Are Stricter Now

The Danish healthcare system is becoming increasingly digital. You will spend a significant part of your shift documenting observations in platforms like CURA or NEXUS. Errors in these reports can lead to serious medical mistakes.

  • Medical Safety: You must read and interpret "Fælles Medicinkort" (FMK) correctly.
  • Ethical Dialogue: You often work with citizens suffering from dementia. This requires high-level empathetic communication to de-escalate difficult situations.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: You must communicate clearly with nurses, doctors, and relatives (pårørende).

The "Module 5" Threshold

Note that simply being "enrolled" in a language school isn't enough for admission to Grundforløb 2 (GF2). You must have your certificate in hand or have a formal evaluation from your Sprogcenter stating that your level is equivalent to the required test. If you are a cleaning professional looking to switch careers, start this conversation with your language teacher 3-6 months before the SOSU start dates (typically January and August).

How to "Hack" Your Language Learning

General Danish classes focus on "Hygge" and everyday life. To succeed in SOSU, you need Vagtsplan-Dansk (Shift-plan Danish). We recommend using our Practice Hub to master terms like Borgernær sygepleje, Personlig hygiejne, and Livskvalitet. Mastering these 50-100 core healthcare words will make your admission interview significantly easier.
