Foreign Document Validation

One of the biggest hurdles for immigrants in Denmark is proving that their foreign education is valid. To enter the SOSU-helper or SOSU-assistant programs, the Danish school system needs to verify that you have completed at least 9 or 10 years of basic education.

If you have a high school diploma or a university degree from your home country, you do not need to start from zero. The Danish Agency for Higher Education and Science (UFSN) provides a free service to compare your qualifications to the Danish levels.

Why is this necessary?

Danish educational institutions require proof of your academic level to grant admission. Without a validated diploma, you might be asked to take extra exams in Math or Danish that you have already passed in your home country.

How long does it take?

The process usually takes 1 to 2 months. We highly recommend starting this step while you are still working in your current job or attending language school, as it is the most time-consuming part of the application.

Pre-Application Checklist

Before you open the application portal, ensure you have clear, digital scans (PDF) of the following:

Your original High School Diploma / Degree Certificate

A full transcript of grades (the list of subjects you studied)

Certified translations (required if documents are not in English, Danish, Norwegian, or Swedish)

Proof of name change (only if your current name differs from your diploma)

A valid copy of your Passport or Residence Permit

Certified Translation Rules

Documentation must be in Danish, English, German, French, Norwegian, or Swedish. If your diploma is in any other language, you must have it translated.

  • Translations must be performed by a Certified Translator.
  • The translation must include the translator's stamp and signature.
  • You should upload both the translation AND the original language document together.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I lost my original diploma?

If you cannot provide your original certificates, you must contact your former school or the Ministry of Education in your home country for a verified copy. The Danish authorities cannot evaluate your education based only on your word.

What is an RKV (Realkompetencevurdering)?

If you have many years of work experience in healthcare or service but no formal diploma, you can apply for an RKV at the SOSU school. This evaluates your "life skills" and work history to shorten your study time.
