Working in Hospitals & Psychiatry
One of the biggest advantages of the SSA title is the ability to work in Region-led hospitals. Whether it is the maternity ward, emergency room, or a specialized surgical ward, SSAs work side-by-side with nurses. In Psychiatry, SSAs are highly valued for their dual-competency: they can handle the physical health needs of the patient while using social-pedagogical tools to manage mental health crises.
Salary and Bonuses in 2026
An SSA typically starts with a base salary significantly higher than an SSH. According to the FOA/KL agreement, a newly qualified SSA in a municipality starts on pay step 24. That is an estimated 29,000–31,000 kr. a month before tax and bonuses, depending on the area. Because SSAs often work in 24-hour care settings like hospitals, evening and night shift supplements can push the monthly gross income to an estimated 35,000 kr. or more.
