Financial Stability in the SOSU Sector
One of the most unique aspects of the Danish healthcare education system is the Voksenelevløn. In 2026, as Denmark faces a massive shortage of SOSU professionals, the government and municipalities have reinforced this financial model to encourage career-switching. Unlike a typical university student who relies on the SU (Statens Uddannelsesstøtte), a SOSU apprentice is considered a municipal employee from day one of their main course.
This means you don't just get a "grant"—you get a salary governed by the FOA collective agreement. This salary is paid both while you are in school and while you are doing your practical internship (praktik) in a nursing home or home care setting. For many international residents, this is the only viable way to complete an education while supporting a family or paying rent in expensive cities like Copenhagen or Aarhus.
The "1-Year Rule" Explained
The most common question we receive is: "What counts as relevant experience?"In 2026, the criteria have widened. Relevant work often includes previous experience in care, cleaning, kitchen work, or social support. However, it must be documented. You will need to provide "Ansættelsesbeviser" or "Lønsedler" (pay slips) to prove that you have worked at least 24 hours per week on average for a total of 12 months. Some municipalities, such as Københavns Kommune, are more flexible than others if they are in desperate need of staff.
Why the difference?
Why does an adult get 24,000 kr. while a 20-year-old gets 6,800 kr.? The Danish system recognizes that adults have higher fixed costs (housing, children) and that their previous work experience is a "resource" for the healthcare system. Even if your experience was in a kitchen, your ability to show up on time and manage responsibilities makes you a more stable student.
Critical Note for 2026:
Always apply for Voksenelevløn *before* you sign your final contract. It is very difficult to change from SU to Adult Pay once the course has started.
The Application Process
- Step 1: Collect all pay slips and employment contracts from the last 4 years.
- Step 2: When applying via Optagelse.dk or the municipality portal, check the box for "Jeg søger voksenelevløn."
- Step 3: Prepare for an interview where the municipality will verify your "relevans" for the healthcare field.
